HTML Basics

HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) is the basic code that runs the world wide web.  This code allows designers to arrange text, images and other elements on a web page. When a web page is loaded in the browser, it downloads all the images and text and displays them to the user.

There are numerous tags or elements used in HTML. Most have an opening and closing tag to indicate when an effect is to begin and end.

HTML is a formal recommendation by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). It is supported by the major web browsers, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Apple’s Safari and Google Chrome, which also support some additional code (CSS, JavaScript, Flash, etc.).

This website is focused primarily on using HTML code and CSS.

It is important to note that web browsers implement tags differently and may also support non-standard code. Web developers are wise to test pages in a variety of browsers to make sure they are satisfied with how their code is rendered in each, and that they are reasonably consistent for different users.

Some features in HTML 4 are referred to as dynamic HTML, and Extensible Hypertext Markup Language (XHTML) is sometimes referred to as HTML 5.
